South Park Christmas Carols: Dead, Dead, Dead

Blue Christmas treeBy Gail Rubin

This morning, NPR did a brilliant story surveying downer Christmas songs, titled “Have Yourself a Sullen Little Christmas.” It starts out:

“Less than a week before Christmas, holly-jolly holiday music abounds — and if you’re not feeling holly or jolly, it can be a little hard to take. For NPR Music’s Stephen Thompson and Morning Edition producer Travis Larchuk, the holidays often mean searching for alternatives: In Thompson’s case, it means diversions into melancholy, while Larchuk often seeks something cutting or sarcastic or hyperrealistic to cut through the treacle.”

Among the selections sampled was this little gem, “Dead, Dead, Dead” from the South Park holiday album Mr. Hankey’s Christmas Classics. They described it as a song that “takes the long view about the fleeting nature of life itself.”

My husband suggested The Doyenne of Death® might make this her theme song.

Here are the lyrics, and you can see the video on YouTube below!

Dead, Dead, Dead, someday you’ll be dead
Dead, Dead, Dead, someday we’ll all be dead.
The minute we’re born, we start dying,
We die a little more every day..
Young or old, rich or poor,
There’s nothing we can do to stop it..
So look long at that Christmas tree,
It may be the last one that you see..
Decorate your house in green and red,
‘cos someday you’ll be dead..

Dead, Dead, Dead, someday you’ll be dead
Dead, Dead, Dead, someday we’ll all be dead.
It might happen in a couple months
Or 50 years from now..
But no matter when it happens
It will seem too soon to you..
So be sure on Christmas eve
When you snuggle into bed..
That you thank God for your family
‘cos someday they’ll be dead..

Dead, Dead, Dead, someday you’ll be dead
Dead, Dead, Dead, someday we’ll all be dead.
Who knows how many Christmas’s
Are left in their short lives?
Nobody knows, that my point!
Enjoy them while you can.
And so on Christmas morning
Let good tidings fill your head..
What a festive season,
Someday you’ll be dead

Dead, Dead, Dead, someday you’ll be dead
Dead, Dead, Dead, everyone you know, dead.
A very Merry Christmas to you!
Dead, Dead, Dead..
Merry Christmas Everybody!
Dead,Dead,Dead
A Good Goodbye
