On this Veterans Day, November 11, 2019, I salute the veterans in my family and among friends, living and dead.
On this day last year, I was in New Braunfels, Texas for the memorial service for Pete Goodwin, who served as a medic in Vietnam. He died October 20, 2018 of multiple organ failure. Read this post about him and the memorial service. Here’s the video of the memorial service for Pete:
Two uncles on my mother’s side died over the past two years. Larry “Lucky” Bubes died on December 21, 2017. He served in the Army in Korea. His cremated remains are interred in a Maryland veterans cemetery.
Sydney Charles Bubes died on September 27, 2018. He served in the Marine Corps stateside during the Korean conflict. We held a funeral for him on October 12, 2018, and his body is buried in the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Florida. Here is the video of his funeral:
And my dad, Sheldon Rubin, still living at 89, served in the Navy Reserve in the 1950s and 1960s. He flew on cargo planes delivering supplies around the country. His flights included visits to Guantanamo Bay and upstate New York.
On Dad’s side of the family, his Uncle George Cohen was an officer in the Merchant Marines. Dad’s cousin Marvin was in the Army, and his cousin Sherwin was in the Army in World War II. An my Uncle Arthur Cohen served in the Army Reserves – he got to go to Texas during his service.
If I missed anyone in the family, my apologies! Let me know and I will add more names and roles to this post.
To all of those who served in the United States military, this Veterans Day, I salute you. Thank you for your service.
