News and Notes: Moving News and A New Look!

Sep 3, 2013 | 0 comments

A Good Goodbye News and Notes has a new look, and so does The Family Plot Blog. It’s still a work in process, but the majority of The Family Plot Blog now lives at AGoodGoodbye.com (which if you haven’t visited lately also has a new look).

The blog looks a little different, but still has the same great content! The top most-visited posts are about Greek Orthodox funeral traditions and the true story behind the film Get Low.

Hope you’ll tune in for a great conversation this Wednesday, September 4 with Jaweed Kaleem, death and religion reporter for The Huffington Post. He’ll be live on A Good Goodbye Radio at 6:00 p.m. ET / 3:00 p.m. PT on the RockStar Radio Network.

Top Tips from Last Week’s Show

On last week’s A Good Goodbye radio show, we discussed home funerals and death care with two experts: funeral director Char Barrett with A Sacred Moment and Beth Knox, founder of Crossings: Caring for Our Own at Death. Both also represent the National Home Funeral Alliance, which is having its national conference in Raleigh, NC October 18-20, 2013.

Two tips for those who want to do death care in their own homes:

  • A number of states are incorporating an Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS), enabling online filing for death certificates. Call before running to the county health department, office of the medical investigator or other state/local offices that issue death certificates.
  • Nine states require funeral home involvement in some aspect of death care. They are Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, and New York.

Movie Night! Bernie on September 26

Bernie DVD coverMark your calendars to attend the next Movie Night at FRENCH Funerals-Cremations on Thursday, September 26, at 5:00 p.m. We’ll be screening the comedy film Bernie at their Lomas location, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE in Albuquerque.

Bernie is based on a true story. In tiny Carthage, Texas, popular assistant funeral director Bernie Tiede strikes up a friendship with the meanest and richest widow in town, Marjorie Nugent. After the townspeople hadn’t seen Marjorie for months, they were shocked at the news she had been dead for some time – and Bernie was charged with her murder. The film stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey.

Popcorn and refreshments will be served! Please RSVP for this unique, fun and free event by calling Vicki Wilmarth at 505-843-6333 or email [email protected].
