Hi, I’m Gail Rubin, The Doyenne of Death®, with today’s Mortality Minute.

As a funeral consumer, you have specific rights when buying goods and services from a funeral home. The Federal Trade Commission’s Funeral Rule, issued in 1984, gives you these rights, such as:

  • The funeral home has to provide a written list of itemized prices upon request, in person or over the phone.
  • You have the right to choose only those goods and services you want, outside of a package deal.
  • You can provide your own casket or urn and the funeral home must accept it – without imposing a fee.
  • And no state law requires embalming for every death.

You can find out more about your rights at FTC.gov and look for Paying Final Respects: Your Rights When Buying Funeral Goods and Services and Shopping for Funeral Services.

Remember, talking about sex won’t make you pregnant, talking about funerals won’t make you dead. Start a conversation today.
