Today’s Pearls Before Swine cartoon strip provides a twist on the Death Cartoon theme. It’s more about being prepared to die.
Pig answers a knock at the door to discover an armadillo standing there. “Hi. Can I help you?” inquires Pig. “Hello. I’m an armadillo. I just moved in next door.” is his reply.
“Nice to meet you! I’ll have to bring over a ‘welcome to the neighborhood’ fruit basket!” says Pig.
“Oh, no need for that,” says the armadillo. “Why not?” says Pig.
“I’ll be hit by a truck soon,” says the armadillo (which, as we all know, is a very common occurrence).
“It’s hard to make friends with roadkill,” says Pig to Rat in the last frame.
Now, if an armadillo knows he’s going to be hit by a truck soon, what does that say about people who pretend that death is optional? We have mental and emotional armor around our thoughts of mortality. That doesn’t stop death from happening.
