Rock music by a band called The Rhythm Coffin at a funeral home? Snakes, hearses and vendors? Yes, it’s the second annual Hearse and Reptile Show at White’s Funeral Home in Azusa, CA. Today’s Ghoulio and Lincoln cartoon references this free event which took place in August.
Last year’s inaugural Hearse and Reptile Show brought close to 800 visitors and they had about 2,000 this year. This is how White’s Funeral Home describes themselves: “We are a 99 year old, family operated firm in Azusa. We are a progressive, forward thinking Funeral Home that really cares about our families we serve and we are all about Celebrating Life. We are a small staff of 5 with a pug.”
“This is one of the most unique PR events I have seen a mortuary host,” said Fernando Lincoln Centeno, the mortician who creates the Ghoulio and Lincoln cartoons. “I hope what they are doing sparks the creative juices of other funeral homes. Think outside of the box to get noticed while involving the community in something fun.”
And White’s Funeral Home is planning a second annual Dia de los Muertos event coming up on the Day of the Dead, Sunday, November 1 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. You can build an altar to honor your Loved Ones. Applications are now available to reserve your own altar space at this event. There is a $10 fee for each entry. For more information, email [email protected] or call (626) 334-2921.
In the cartoon below, a man observing a raucous scene says to Lincoln, “Ghouls and clowns? A bit extreme for a mortuary sponsored event…” Lincoln observes, “This coming from a guy who runs a catering service out of his hearse, for funerals, called “The Last Supper”!
