Today’s Close to Home cartoon has a customer shopping at “Bernbaum Caskets” and the lady behind the counter says, “Can I interest you in one of our frequent-buyer discount cards?”
It’s an interesting twist on retail shopping cards that seem to be in every type of establishment these days – every retailer, except funeral homes, of course. A casual shopper is not going to be in a funeral home looking for a casket – but a smart shopper will be checking them out before someone in the family dies, and doing some funeral planning ahead of need.
Really, how many caskets will one family buy in this lifetime? Maybe one, two, or three? It’s hard to build up a frequent buyer program with those kind of numbers.
