This recent Pickles cartoon shows why sometimes you don’t see a cause of death listed in an obituary. It could be the result of severe embarrassment.
Earl and Opal are sitting on the couch when Earl says, “What would you say is your worst fear, Opal?” She replies, “Flying, definitely. It scares me to death.”
Earl counters, “Statistically speaking, you’re more likely to die in a shopping cart accident at WalMart than in a plane crash.” (The folks at WalMart may take some exception to that comparison.)
Opal says, “If that ever happens to me, promise you won’t let them list the cause of death in my obituary.”
Do you ever read the obits and wonder what the person died of – especially if they were under the age of say, 70? Especially those obituaries that say “died suddenly.” That could be any number of reasons!
