This Close to Home cartoon helps raise awareness of green burial. The casket is a green color, with grass and flowers sprouting from the sides and lid. A woman comments, “The casket is made out of sod to be 100 percent environmentally friendly.” It’s an appropriate cartoon for the first day of spring!
I’ve seen biodegradable caskets of soft woods, bamboo, wicker, sea grass, wool, and recycled cardboard. I’ve yet to see a sod casket introduced to the funeral industry.
Think about peat pots that are used for starting seeds, that are then planted once the growing season gets underway. Why not make a bigger box for planting bodies? Certainly, it would need reinforcement to keep the body from falling through the bottom. Something to think about to grow life from death.
